He was drafted into the Army the next year and later sent to Vietnam. ![]() "It was like turning on a spigot: I would trade them and get another one."Īfter his 1965 graduation from Glenwood High School in Canton, he took a job on an assembly line building washing machines. "I went through so many motorcycles," Worthington said. He bought his first bike, a Husqvarna, at age 13 or 14. "I would say motorcycles were his biggest love," recalled his sister, Holly Laiben. They often dragged Worthington, along with his brother and sister, to museums in Canton and Cleveland.Īs a youngster in Canton, he was more taken with motorcycles. His father, Jack, made 144 of the bronze busts at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton his mother, Marion, did silver work and enameling. The son of two artists started learning about art at an early age. Though born John MacLaren Worthington, he has always gone by the nickname Mac. "Mac Worthington's gallery is one of the signature. "I'm a good salesman," said Worthington, who, with his wild gray hair and small round glasses, looks like a cross between Albert Einstein and John Lennon. The 67-year-old Ohio native, a longtime fixture of the Columbus-area arts scene, has made a living as an artist since the 1970s - and not only because he knows how to sculpt and paint. Not missing a beat, Worthington replied: "To still know where the next meal's coming from." "What's your goal as an artist in the next five to 10 years?" asked David Guion, executive director of the council.
